If you need a domestic electrician in Wrexham or Chester, this is the work we actually do in houses and flats: rewires, extra sockets, consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades, lighting, dedicated circuits, and inspection and testing.
Stewart Rawson Electrical is an NICEIC approved contractor, founded in 2010. We work from Jubilee Manor, Sun Lane, on the Wrexham Industrial Estate. New installation work is designed and certified to the current 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), not the withdrawn 17th Edition.
This page is for homeowners, and for landlords who need the electrics in a dwelling putting right. Gresford, Ruabon, Holt and Penycae are towns we already drive to; they are not separate websites. We do not publish prices, reviews or job write-ups here. If you want a quote, use the numbers at the end of the page.
Domestic electrical work we do
Typical domestic calls for this firm are the ones below. If a job is not on this list, ask — do not assume this page is a catalogue of every trade in the group.
- Full or partial rewires
- Extra sockets and fused spurs
- Consumer unit (fuse board) upgrades
- Recessed lighting and other indoor fittings
- Garden, security and other external lighting
- Shower and cooker circuits
- External power, including a supply for outdoor equipment such as electric gates
- Heating controls
- Extra sockets and circuits for audio and visual equipment
- Electrical inspections and testing
Rewiring
A rewire replaces the fixed wiring — cables, circuits, and usually the accessories — so the installation can be used safely under the current regulations. It is a different job from adding one socket, and it is a different job from changing the consumer unit on its own.
Some switches, fittings or lengths of cable can sometimes stay if they are electrically sound. That has to be agreed before work starts, so you know what is being replaced and what is remaining. When the work is a new installation, you should receive the certificates that go with it, not only a verbal confirmation.
When a rewire is the right job
People ask for a rewire when the wiring is old, when an inspection has found widespread problems, after a serious alteration, or when a property is already being stripped back. We will not invent a typical cost or a typical number of days on this page. The quote depends on the house or flat in front of us.
Extra sockets and dedicated circuits
Most domestic work is smaller than a rewire. Extra sockets, a fused spur, a shower circuit or a cooker circuit still have to be designed so the existing board, earthing and cable routes can take them.
- Extra sockets where you actually use power, including fused spurs
- Dedicated shower and cooker circuits
- External power for the garden or an outbuilding
- Wiring for heating controls
- Extra points for audio and visual kit — the circuits and sockets, not a home-cinema brand
If the existing board cannot take another circuit safely, the honest answer is a consumer unit upgrade, not another adaptor.
Consumer units (fuse boards)
The everyday name is still “fuse box” or “fuse board”. The modern assembly is a consumer unit: a main switch, circuit-breakers and residual current devices.
A board change is often the right job when you are adding load, when an inspection has found missing RCD protection, or when the existing board is damaged or outdated. Replacing a consumer unit, and adding a new circuit, are notifiable domestic work under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. As an NICEIC approved contractor we certify that work rather than leaving you to arrange building control yourself.
The design follows the 18th Edition, not the 17th. We will not list every device a 2026 board might contain, or pretend every house needs the same specification. That comes from the installation we are looking at.
Lighting
Lighting on this page means the electrical work: changing a fitting, installing recessed lights, garden feature lighting, security lights and other external lights. Those are the same trade, not four separate products.
We are not a lighting-design studio on this URL. If you already know what you want fitted, that is enough to quote.
Inspection and testing
A lot of domestic work starts with knowing the condition of the installation. The formal record of a periodic inspection of the fixed wiring is an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). That report has its own page, including who needs one, how long it lasts for a Welsh rental, and what the C1, C2, C3 and FI codes mean: Electrical Installation Condition Reports.
An EICR is not a rewire and not a consumer unit upgrade. If the report is unsatisfactory, any remedial work is a separate quote.
If you let the property
Welsh occupation contracts and English tenancies (including Chester) sit under different rules. The EICR page above is the place for the inspection duty. Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are a separate fitness duty in Wales; the detail is on smoke, heat and CO alarms in a Welsh rental. Estate agents gathering that paperwork can use our estate agent electrical checklist. Do not copy a Welsh alarm spec onto a Chester tenancy, or the other way round.
CCTV, alarms and charge points
If you also need CCTV or an intruder alarm, that work sits with SR Security, not on this page. If you need a vehicle charge point, that is SR Charge Points.
Wrexham, Chester and nearby towns
We are based at Jubilee Manor, Sun Lane, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham, LL13 9RW. The domestic work on this page is the work we do in Wrexham and Chester, and in the surrounding towns we already cover — Gresford, Ruabon, Holt and Penycae among them.
Shops, offices and other workplaces are a different page: commercial electrician.
